How do I calculate seed rate per acre?
Seed rate (lbs/acre) = Target population (seeds/acre) / Seeds per pound / (Germination rate / 100). For example, wheat at 1,200,000 seeds/acre with 15,000 seeds/lb and 92% germination = 87 lbs/acre.
What is a good germination rate?
Most commercial seed has 85-95% germination. Check your seed bag label for the tested rate. Lower germination means you need to plant more seed to hit your target population.
How many seeds per pound for common crops?
Wheat: ~15,000. Corn: ~1,500. Soybeans: ~2,500. Barley: ~13,000. Canola: ~130,000. These vary by variety, so check your seed supplier's data.
Does seeding rate affect yield?
Yes — both under- and over-seeding reduce yield. Too thin = weed pressure and poor canopy closure. Too thick = competition between plants and lodging. Optimal population depends on your soil, climate, and variety.
